Curriculum Committee of Department of Economics Discusses Academic Development
The Curriculum and Study Plans Committee of the Department of Economics and Islamic Banking at the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration at the Islamic University of Minnesota held a meeting on Friday evening, February 6, 2026, at 8:30 p.m., to discuss ways to develop academic plans and introduce new specialized courses in line with contemporary academic and professional developments.
The meeting was chaired by the Committee Head, Dr. Zayed Nawaf Al-Duwairi, and attended by the Vice Dean of the Faculty, Dr. Manal Mohammed Mahmoud, along with committee members: Dr. Ahmed Al-Mohammed, Dr. Imad Mityouri, Associate Professor Dr. Rania Mohammed Amer, Dr. Omaima Ali Sheikh Al-Din Al-Nour, and Ms. Banan Al-Maqrami, Administrative Affairs Officer.
The session commenced with welcoming remarks, followed by a review and approval of the minutes of the previous meeting. The committee then proceeded to follow up on previously agreed-upon items. Several proposed new courses were presented, including Waqf Economics, Contemporary Islamic Finance, and Islamic Financial Technology.
The meeting featured in-depth academic discussions regarding the nature of these courses and their alignment with labor market needs in the field of Islamic economics and banking. Members emphasized the importance of revising course descriptions to ensure a balance between classical Islamic foundations and modern economic developments, while keeping pace with rapid changes in the financial sector.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the committee agreed to introduce a number of newly titled courses: “Waqf Economics and Non-Profit Organizations,” “Digital Islamic Finance,” and “Islamic Financial Technology.” It was further decided that the Committee Head would present detailed course descriptions and propose the appropriate academic level for each course at the next meeting, in preparation for final review and approval.
